At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
